Winter tips

Back to Tips

* If you live in a multi-level home, adjust the vents to evenly heat it. Partially close the vents on the upper level so more warm air will be directed to the lower level.

* Have your roof inspected. Also inspect your roof for damages after storms and high winds.

* Move furniture to change flow patterns in rooms to save wear and tear on carpets.

* Have your heating and cooling systems professionally inspected.

* After a big snow storm, be sure remove snow from roof.

* Test, clean and replace batteries in smoke detectors.

* Remove screens from windows and install storm windows.

* Test all ground-fault-circuit-interrupter (GFCI) type outlets.

* Lubricate interior door hinges.

* Inspect tile for loose or missing grout, cracks, chips, or damaged caulking. Regrout if necessary. Replace or repair broken tiles. Caulk damaged areas if needed.

* Inspect shower and tub doors for proper fit. Recaulk areas if needed.

* Make sure all electrical holiday decorations have tight connections.

* Inspect fencing for rust and standing water. Sand and paint rust spots and fill areas where water is standing.
